Now that the holidays are over it’s time to find that special someone just in time for Valentine’s Day. Though online dating can be fun, exciting, and convenient, there is always a risk of running into a Catfish– someone who uses a false online persona to catch you. According to TheNextWeb.com there are up to an estimated 137.76 million fake profiles on Facebook alone- but you can avoid being Catfished (Or ending up on MTV’s Catfish: The TV Show).

If They’re Quick to Jump In, RUN!

Recently meet someone online, but they’re already asking for loans, money or gifts? End your communication immediately! Catfish will often begin a romantic relationship for financial gain, but make no mistake, once you’re out of cash they’ll be out of sight. Just ask the Federal Trade Commission– in 2013 they reported 9,643 romance scam complaints!

Look For Suspicious Behavior

Catfish are skilled excuse-makers, and have an answer planned to cover each of their lies. Be on the lookout for suspicious behaviors in your new beau like refusing to video chat, share new photos with you, or details about their life that don’t add up.

Look Up Their Phone Number or Email Address

If you’ve been communicating by email or via text, begin the process of checking them out with an Email Search or a Reverse Phone Lookup and find out who you’ve been talking to.

Run a Background Check

The surest way to protect yourself before an in-person date is to run a Background Check. You can see Criminal Records, Marriage Records, Bankruptcies, Liens and other Public Records– and save yourself some heartbreak!

Know of more tips and tools to keep yourself from becoming Catfish bait? We’d love to hear them in the comments!
